Finding board games for kids that are age appropriate and hold their attention for more than 2 seconds can be tough. But this adorable preschool board game is perfect for ages 2-5!
This board game was recommended by a friend, so I grabbed it off Amazon (thank you Prime shipping) and it was in my hand within 2 days.
It’s labeled a “strategy game for kids” and we were anxious to try it out!
The game is called The Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel and it’s just about the cutest board game I’ve ever seen!
Very easy to play, though there are a few “house rules” we added to help the gameplay just a bit.
Preschool Board Game for Kids Review
This game was recommended to me by a friend who has two boy in the recommended age range (2-5) and after hearing her glowing reviews, I knew I had to try it out for my own family!
One of the things I really like about these preschool games, is that there is no reading required! So, even if your child isn’t reading yet, they can still fully participate and not feel like they are being “babied” as you read for them.
The object of this game to is fill up your tree with one of each of the colored acorns.
It may seem simple enough, but there are a few obstacles that might make it a little difficult for you!
Spin the spinner and follow the space you land one, which will either allow you to pick up 1-2 acorns, steal acorns from another player, skip a turn, or lose all your acorns to the storm!
The Sneaky Squirrel: This spot allows you to steal any acorn that you are lacking from another player.
The Sad Squirrel: Skip your turn if you end up on this spot!
A Storm: Uh-oh!! A storm blows through and you lose all your acorns.
Our House Rules for This Preschool Board Game
While these rules will work for the vast majority of kids, some kids don’t like competition or trying to “take” things from another player.
When I was a teacher I regularly modified game rules so that everyone in the class could enjoy the games we played!
I’m not an “everyone gets a trophy” supporter in general, but when it comes to something like a simple game, I also don’t feel like crushing a child’s spirit in the name of “the rules” is necessary either.
So, here are the two house rules we created to allow for enjoyable game play for all:
1. If you land on a color spot you already have, spin again until you get to play.
2. If you don’t want to steal an acorn, you don’t have to. My son is very sensitive to the feelings of others, and he perceives this action as very mean. So, we tend to skip it altogether.
Most other kids are just going to see it as normal game play, so just modify as needed on this point!
How Long Does this Board Game Last?
The time it takes to get through the game depends on how many players you have playing, and whether or not you use the house rules above.
The house rules we use cause the game to be a bit faster, since you aren’t skipping as many turns, or losing as many acorns to the Sneaky Squirrel!
However, one round of gameplay with 2 people is about 10 minutes. With 3 people it’s about 15ish.
Generally, we play about 3 rounds before my son wants to move onto something else!
I highly recommend this game and you can grab your own copy of The Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel here if you want to give it a try!
